A new skate park for Leipzig! With everything your heart desires. And a park around it. That was the plan for the new skate park in Grünau.
After a participation process and draft design by Libero Architekten, Yamato Living Ramps was brought on board as the construction company and endboss as the planning authority to give the project the necessary excellence. An area in Leipzig-Grünau was chosen as the location for the new park, where an old, rather outdated skate park already existed. The old park, located right next to the Heizhaus indoor skate park, was shredded and used as fill material under the new park. A varied, state-of-the-art skate area was built on the site of the old facility – barrier-free and with Olympic standards.
However, there is a peculiarity in the planning: A district heating route lies beneath the park to be planned and divides the park in two. Planning had to be done in such a way that an excavator could reach the pipe in the shaft within 30 minutes. But what initially seems like a problem is perfectly staged as a stylistic device: In this area, individual pieces of concrete and large paving stones are used to create a nice urban contrast to the rest of the smooth polished concrete.
Despite or because of the difficulties in planning, one of the best skate parks in Germany has been created with an almost endless range of possibilities. Numerous skateboard and bike features, such as stairs, ledges, rails in the street area and corners, bumps and jump lines in the flow part of the facility invite you to ride. A maximum number of different skate areas are available side by side, which can be used by many skaters, bikers, scooter and wheelchair users at the same time in a never-ending combination of elements. The intelligent floodlight, which illuminates the court for 30 minutes at the touch of a button, provides the necessary brightness in the evening hours. The park-like facility also offers plenty of areas for lingering and observing and fits in perfectly with the surroundings, where there are other opportunities for sports or just hanging out with streetball, ping-pong and calisthenics.
The skate park has also been awarded prizes. The facility, which was completed in 2021, received recognition as part of Sächsischer Staatspreis für Baukultur 2022 and Architekturpreis der Stadt Leipzig 2023. But it's not just the juries that are impressed – the users are enthusiastic too. Numerous YouTube skatepark test videos from the scene with brilliant ratings speak volumes. It couldn't be better!
