In the district of Dresden-Gorbitz, a fallow area is to be developed into a meeting place for citizens within the next two years. Endboss has been commissioned with this task by the Eisenbahner- und Wohnungsbau-Genossenschaft (EWG). In the course of this, we are looking for 3 artists who want to engage in an artistic collaboration with us within the framework of a one-month residency.
Instead of resorting to conventional participation formats, we want to approach this urban space in an experimental and interdisciplinary way and explore it together with the invited artists from their respective positions. In doing so, we are interested in the following questions in general:
What artistic means are available to us to depict and explore real spatial contexts?
How can interfaces between urban and artistic practice emerge?
How can a space, or a place, and its communities be activated in the long term through artistic research, observation and intervention?
And these questions interest us in particular:
What is this place?
From which perspective?
Where are the hidden potentials?
Which socio-spatial connections might remain hidden from the first glance?
What do you see that we don‘t?
In order to get to the bottom of these questions, we will provide a furnished 3-room apartment with a view of the planning plot for the duration of the residency (4 weeks), as well as an artist fee of € 1,500. In addition, each artist will receive 500 € material money.
The artistic work on site should and can be freely designed. At the end of the residency period there should be a public format in the form of an exhibition, an artist talk or similar for the neighbor hood. In addition, we would like the artists to document their stay in the form of a „diary“ - the artistic means for this can be chosen freely and in accordance with their own artistic practice. Attendance during the residency period is mandatory. The residencies will take place from May to July 2021 - this (admittedly short-notice) temporal availability is therefore a basic requirement for an application. Application for collectives is possible, but unfortunately we cannot increase the fee.
If you are interested, we welcome an application that should include a letter of motivation of no more than one page, why you/they find the residency and this kind of collaboration exciting and what this has to do with your previous artistic practice, as well as a portfolio.

The Gorbitz district was planned „on the drawing board“ and is one of the largest new housing development in Dresden after the Second World War. Originally planned as a „modern district of tomorrow“ (air, light, central heating), over time and especially within the last 15 years a change took place that can be observed in many prefabricated housing estates. Today, Gorbitz is repeatedly appearing negatively in the media covered with busswords such as „social hotspot“ and „ghettoization“. In fact, however, Gorbitz is a district that is multi-layered in terms of its residents and its development, and in which various actors, including the responsible housing cooperative, are constantly working on the transformation of this living environment.
